The demonstration uses ViaVoice speech recognition technology to make a verbal inquiry to a host server system, which will then translate the speech request to text, query a back-end server for the requested information, and deliver the results to a WAP-enabled device. ViaVoice supports a distributed voice technology, allowing voice processing to be divided between mobile devices and voice servers. This is one of the first technologies to enable using voice input to deliver text or voice-based content to WAP enabled devices. IBM ViaVoice for Distributed Voice In/WAP Out demonstrates natural delivery of information over a mobile device. According to IBM Voice Systems, working in both text and speech will provide a more intuitive way of accessing information, whether from the PC, mobile phone, PDA, or even an automobile. The best answer may not be choosing a single method, but instead a multi-modal access approach. For this to happen, however, access methods need to improve so that users can obtain and manage information in the wireless environment easily. As computers get smaller, wireless devices are emerging as the next generation vehicle for the Internet.
